Effects of Sports Massage Back to top Lymphatic flow~ absorbs excess interstitial fluid return it to the venous system via lymph nodes which filter out toxins, the lymphatic system does not have the benefit of a pump it moves through muscle contraction, lymph vessels run parallel to veins massage stimulates the flow in both of them. General circulation~ all the cell of our body rely on good blood supply for growth repair and nutrition, blood circulation is slower in some areas such as the legs, massage strokes push the blood flow along to the heart. Micro circulation~ blood vessel walls need to be soft and pliable, massage forces blood through them causing a stretching effect which increases the size and function of them. Interstitial permeability~ tissues have tiny pores which allow certain chemicals to pass through, these structures can become thick and fibrous, the pores may close and the flow of fluid will suffer, stronger massage strokes help open theses pores. Scar tissue~ when an injury occurs some bleeding will take place and develop into scar tissue, this is a vital part of the healing process, however too much bleeding can occur and excessive scar tissue will form, scar tissue hardens and can calcify as hard as bone, techniques used in sports massage can break down scar tissue. Adhesions/fibrous tissue~ muscle fibers can mat together into a hard lump or knot, this can lead to considerable restriction in function. Sports massage breaks down the lumps. Flexibility~ sports massage is able to stretch tissue in all directions in a way that may not be possible with exercise, after which greater range of movement can be achieved. Nervous system~ massage affects the nervous system in many ways, this accounts for the feeling of well being after a treatment.
