Hypnosis Guide

What is Hyponosis ?  Back to top

We are not going to discuss the type of hypnosis seen on the TV, you will not be asked perform foolish acts by a hypnotherapist. The best way to explain hypnosis is to say it is a deep state of relaxation where your mind becomes blank and you are free from stressors and worries. You are not asleep or unconscious during hypnosis. In this state the subconscious mind is able to respond from suggestions from the therapist.

Hypnosis has been around for many centuries the word hypnosis means sleep in Greek, other forms of hypnosis exist called chants, and ritual dancing or monotonous dancing, priests of different religions have used hypnosis in ceremony.

The Brain Back to top

The outer layer of the brain is our conscious mind which helps with our daily decision-making process, realities, logic and rationality , it only deal with about 6-9 things at once before it is overloaded. The subconscious mind is deeper and works on auto pilot, it works with emotions, imagination  memories and the autonomic nervous system. It is believed the conscious mind is in the left hand side of the brain and the subconscious mind is on the right side.

What Happens During a Hypnosis Treatment ? Back to top

Almost everyone however some are more easily hypnotisable than others and that it will also depend upon one’s willingness to be hypnotised at the time. After the consultation the therapist will assess if you are a suitable candidate for hypnosis, you will be asked to sit or lie down and then you will be guided into trance by the therapist quietly talking to you and suggesting you feel sleepy, you might be asked to look at an object like a spinning wheel or a light, there might also be relaxing background music. The therapist often tapes the session for you to take home to practice yourself. When under hypnosis you feel like you are just dozing off, your breathing slows down you may feel like you are floating or sinking into the chair. The therapist talks to your subconscious mind, reinforcing it with positive thoughts. You can not be forced to go under hypnosis if you don't want to and most people will remember what was said to them in trance.

How do I find a hypnotherapist ? Back to top
Your GP may be able to refer you to a psychologist practising cognitive behaviour therapy or a psychotherapist who may also practise hypnotherapy. Or you can see a private psychotherapist who includes hypnotherapy in their practice. The United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy, British Hypnotherapy Association, and the National Register of Hypnotherapists and Psychotherapists should be able to give you details of people who practise hypnotherapy.

As with all types of therapy you need to check that the therapist is properly qualified and accredited to a professional organisation.

The Hypnotherapy Association is a non-profit making organisation and is a leading independent professional body in Britain representing approved hypnotherapists in active practice.

Self Hypnosis Back to top

You may not know it but you probably use a form of self hypnosis every day ! the power of self -suggestion is very real, when you repeat phrases to your self over and over eventually you believe it  the effect can be very negative and self destructive if you tell yourself enough times "I will never be able to swim" you probable wont ! The subconscious mind holds on to these negative suggestions. Positive self hypnosis can be learnt and you can put yourself in trance state whenever you like. Some people are not suitable for self-hypnosis your hypnotherapist will advise you.
