How to blend Essential oilsBack to top
Essential oils are blended with two things in mind therapeutic
properties and aroma. Several oils blended together are called a
synergy and the right combination is very important so they work
together and do not pull apart. In general most oils from the same
family blend together, see the A-Z of oils most florals blend with
floral and wood with wood see fragrance chart below.
There are many
Aromatherapy essential oils and combinations
that can be used, we have listed some common conditions and popular oils,
remember to check the
safety
data before using any essential oils.
Aromatic blending for the pleasure of the aroma is a creativity science. When using a blend created for
its smell, therapeutic benefit can also happen. The blend is primarily
for aroma not therapeutic value.
Safety precautions should be followed for all blending,
including aroma blending.
Big fragrance houses study the art and science of perfumery blending for years. They use essential oils and synthesized
chemicals that mimic the constituents of essential oils, because they are cheaper
than using pure essential oils and give be more consistent aroma in
mass production. In aromatherapy blending, only natural essential oils
are used.
Perfume
Notes
Oil aromas are classified by "notes" Ylang Ylang is said to be a well
balanced perfume oil, it has a soft floral top note, a rich creamy
middle note and a spicy base note. To keep things simple each oil is
also classified under its dominating note. The theory in perfumery is
to try to use one of each to make a balance, but in aromatherapy you
also need to take into account therapeutic properties this is where it
gets complicated and training and experience is needed.
Essential oils can be categorized into groups based on their
aromas.
Florals: Blend with spicy, citrus and woody oils.
Spicy & oriental: Blend with florals, oriental and citrus
oils.
Mint: Blend with citrus, herbaceous, woody, and earthy oils.
Woody oils blend well with any.

Lets
Start Aroma Blending !
When
creating a new blend, use small number of drops of about 5 to cut down
on waste of expensive oils. Use smelling strips to try different mixs.
Make a
note of what you have done for future reference and label the bottle.
Store you
blend in dark glass bottles, oils go off with light and eat through
plastic !
It takes a
few days for the oils to settle down together before use
Simple
Aroma Recipes Alcohol Base Perfume
6 teaspoons Vodka
2 teaspoons Distilled Water
60 drops of your perfume blend
Mix
together well and store in an airtight dark glass bottle. Let settle
for a couple of weeks, shake the bottle a few time a day to mix the
oils up. When its ready filter the perfume through a coffee filter
then pour it back in the bottle..
Carrier Oil Base Perfume 25 drops of your perfume blend
2 tablespoons of carrier oil
Mix together and store in an airtight dark glass bottle. Leave a
couple of days, use sparingly.
Unlike
aroma perfume blending the importance is placed on the therapeutic
value of the essential oils. Each essential oil has its own
therapeutic value some have more than others. When creating your blend
make sure the therapeutic values don't contradict each other. You do
need to like the smell of the blend its not going to do you much good
if the smell knocks you sick ! some people hate the smell of certain
oils I for instance cant stand geranium.
Dilution of Essential oils Before you apply the essential oils on to the skin they must be
diluted in carrier oils. Measure out the carrier oil into a glass bowl
then add the essential oil. Use 3-4 oils per recipe, to test combinations before you mix
add a drop of each oil onto a strip of blotting paper or cotton bud to
test if you like the combination.
