What is alpha-Lipoic acid ?
Alpha-Lipoic acid (also known as thioctic acid) is a vitamin-like substance
which plays an important role in the body’s energy supply processes.
Alpha-lipoic acid is also important within the body as a powerful antioxidant
capable of protecting both the lipid (cell membrane) and aqueous (cytoplasmic)
cellular compartments from free radical induced damage.
Alpha-lipoic acid is mainly obtained from the diet, although small amounts are
also manufactured within the body. Red meat (especially liver, spinach and
brewer’s yeast are good sources of alpha-lipoic acid.
What does alpha-Lipoic
acid do ?
Alpha-lipoic acid acts in conjunction with the B vitamins thiamin, riboflavin,
niacin and pantothenic acid to convert sugars and fat into energy within the
body. Alpha-lipoic acid, together with its active metabolite dihydrolipoic acid,
are powerful antioxidants which uniquely are equally effective in protecting
both the aqueous and lipid compartments of the cell from free radical damage.
Alpha-lipoic acid helps maintain normal functioning of the immune and nervous
systems. Alpha-lipoic acid also helps maintain normal liver function following
exposure to environmental toxins, such as industrial chemicals or toxic heavy
metals.

Alpha Lipoic Acid
Benefits:
Alpha Lipoic Acid is a powerful antioxidant nutritional supplement. It is
naturally produced in the body to help with energy production, but only in small
amounts.
The body needs Alpha Lipoic Acid to produce energy. It plays a very important
role in the the energy-producing structures in cells. Foods contain only tiny
amounts of it. At least 100-200 mg must be taken to receive the optimal benefits
of Alpha Lipoic Acid. Clinical studies have shown that Alpha Lipoic Acid will
eliminate free radicals, increase effectiveness of other antioxidants. So it is
one of the valuable nutritional supplements.
Alpha Lipoic Acid is an extremely important part of the body's antioxidant
network. It also improves the effectiveness of antioxidants.
Alpha Lipoic Acid is called the universal antioxidant because it is solvable in
fat and water. And so it can get into any cell of the body.
Alpha Lipoic Acid produces a synergistic effect when taken with other
antioxidants. Alpha Lipoic Acid improves the effectiveness of other nutrients
such as Vitamins C & E. It has the remarkable ability to recycle and preserve
other important antioxidants (including Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Glutathione,
CoEnzyme Q-10) When the body is deficient in Alpha Lipoic Acid, the other
antioxidants will not perform as well. This makes Alpha Lipoic Acid absolutely
essential if you are taking any type of vitamins or antioxidants.
Heart-Liver Support : Alpha Lipoic Acid 200 mg Support your liver and manage
blood sugar naturally... Sufficient intake of Alpha Lipoic Acid can greatly
increase the amount of fuel burned in the cell, thereby improving the amount of
energy available to your body for tasks such as muscle movement, growth and
repair of tissues. Scientific testing has confirmed its ability to increase the
sugar-burning capacity of insulin and in some cases has resulted in less insulin
dependency.
Are there adverse effects from alpha-Lipoic acid ?
Alpha-lipoic acid is generally well tolerated, although individuals may rarely
suffer from gastrointestinal disturbance or a skin rash. Alpha-lipoic acid is
very safe, with no reports of significant adverse effects. The toxicity of
alpha-lipoic acid is very low, with an LD50 in rats of 500mg/Kg bodyweight.
Patients with diabetes taking alpha-lipoic acid may require modification of
their insulin medication.
